As Cara Santa Maria, Talk Nerdy to Me columnist from The Huffington Post recently reported, modern scientists may be closer than ever to finding the magical formula for physical beauty. Researchers at UCSD at the University of Toronto recently found that female faces were judged to be the most attractive when the distance between the eyes and the mouth was roughly 35% of the overall length of the face as well as when the eyes were around 46% the width of the face.
Scientists have thought mathematical proportions to be a significant predictor of physical attractiveness across cultures and even across species ever since the ground breaking classic mathematician Pythagoras identified what he called “the golden ratio.”
Aside from proportion, symmetry has long been known to be an important factor when it comes to physical beauty as well, along with other typical beautiful qualities like youthfulness, smooth skin, and bright eyes. Symmetry is always preferable over asymmetry, not only when it comes to the face, but also the body including the breasts and nipples.
Fortunately for those who may not have these qualities naturally, the beauty industry has come a long way since Pythagorean times. Procedures like nipple pigmentation, permanent eyebrow application, and permanent lip coloring, can now help men and women to improve the symmetry of their face and body.

As the New York Times recently reported, non-specialists performing lucrative plastic surgery procedures they aren’t necessarily experts in is becoming an increasing trend. According to reporter Kate Murphy, more doctors, regardless of specialty, are expanding their practices to include cosmetic surgery procedures such as breast lifts, breast augmentations, liposuction, Botox and more.
United States law does not prevent doctors from practicing only within the specialty fields in which they were trained, but when doctors practice outside of their specialty areas, patient’s often end up disappointed and even injured. According to the New York Times report, one 59 year old female patient was left with thick scars on her temples and abdomen after having a facelift with a doctor who turned out to be board certified in otolaryngology, not plastic surgery.
There has been an increase in patients in need of scar revision and scar camouflage. The increased number of non-specialists providing plastic surgery may be contributing to this trend. Patients should not be afraid to ask a doctor who is advertising to be a board certified what specialty area he or she is actually certified in. The same tip applies for permanent makeup procedures. It is important to have your scar revision or nipple replacement procedures completed by a certified professional with years of experience.

Although statistics show that most patients end up very happy with the results of their breast implant surgery, as with any surgical procedure, there is quite a bit a patient needs to consider beforehand. When it comes to thinking about breast implant surgery, don’t ignore the following lesser known details.
- It’s possible that you will need to have follow-up or corrective surgery if your breast implants rupture, wrinkle, or change shape. Saline implants rupture at a rate of 1% per year.
- Implants can cause permanent changes in your breast tissue including wrinkles, dimples or other changes.
- The U.S. FDA recommends that women who have breast implants have an MRI three years after getting implant surgery and then every two years after that regardless of their age. This is done in order to check if the implant is intact and well as to check the condition of breast tissue.
- Even minimally invasive breast implant surgery can cause scarring and hypopigmentation of the nipples. Although surgical methods have come a long way and scars are often small, many women will still need nipple pigmentation and scar camouflage to complete a natural look.
- Breast implants will not prevent the natural changes in the breast that occur as a result of aging, changes in weight, or future pregnancies.
Talk to your doctor if you have questions about these facts and make sure that you’re completely comfortable before your procedure. This will help to ensure that you’re one of the many women satisfied with your breast implant results.

A recent report by Dr. Sapna Parikh of WABC New York suggests that the chemotherapy drug Avastin may help to shrink tumors and even possibly improve the results of breast surgery so that patients need less of it.
The report was sparked by two new studies published in the New England Journal of Medication. The studies, which included 3,000 women, showed that those who were given the drug Avastin before their breast surgeries had an increased chance of their tumor shrinking completely. These findings might suggest that, for some women, Avastin given before breast surgery might eliminate the need for a full mastectomy, thus saving their breasts. Alternatively, only a relatively less traumatic lumpectomy would need to be performed.
Due to a variety of other factors that must still be researched further, however, it is not yet clear whether it is worth giving Avastin before breast surgery or whether or not it is safe. The drug Avastin is no longer approved by the FDA for use with breast cancer patients. The approval was revoked last November when the agency was unable to show the drug to be both safe and effective.
This means many women who Avastin may have helped will still need to undergo full lateral or bilateral mastectomies in order to ensure the best chance of complete tumor removal. Fortunately, for these women, reconstructive surgery, scar camouflage and nipple replacement can still help to save the look of their breasts.

According to Siren Magazine, whose article “Why Vanity Keeps Us Poor” shocked readers everywhere, the American woman spends an average of $12,000 annually on beauty products and grooming. That’s $1,000 every month! When you start tallying up all the necessary expenditures such as nail care, which can cost anywhere from $20-$100 per month, hair care and maintenance, which can cost even a “low maintenance” woman hundreds of dollars monthly, and, last but not least, makeup, which most women use daily and sometimes buy just as often, $1000 per month becomes very believable!
Perhaps these numbers don’t shock you at all because you’ve summed it all up before. Of the few women that do know exactly what they spend on beauty products each month, many wince in brief dismay only to turn a blind eye from the financial damage feeling that there isn’t any other way. “This is just part of being a socially acceptable woman,” you may have found yourself rationalizing, but the truth is, there is another way. Having permanent makeup applied by a talented NYC permanent makeup expert can greatly reduce what you’ll need to spend on beauty yearly.
Many women spend at least $50 per month or $600 yearly on eye makeup, but for about $1500, the cost of just one quality bag and a pair of shoes, you can have correct brows and eyeliner applied for life, potentially saving you around $30,000 over the course of 50 years! During the past few years, the Asian art of eyebrow threading became popular in metropolises like New York, New York and eventually spread to salons and mall kiosks throughout the country. Chances are you’ve passed by an eyebrow threading kiosk in your local mall during a recent shopping trip. You may have even wondered whether or not eyebrow threading can help you get the eyebrows that best compliment your face.
Removing eyebrow hair using thread is an ancient beauty practice that originated in Eastern countries like Egypt, India, and China. Practitioners remove individual hairs by twisting a thin cotton thread to trap hair in a “mini lasso” before pulling them out. Eyebrow threading can help to remove stray hairs and the results can last up to six weeks. However, if done incorrectly, re-growth may occur much more quickly.
An additional “con” of this practice is its inability to create the look of growth where the look of growth is needed to create a more flattering eyebrow shape for Asian women or women of any other ethnicity. If you’re looking for permanently perfectly shaped eyebrows, eyebrow threading is not the best choice.
An expert New York City permanent makeup artist can provide you with perfectly shaped eyebrows all year long and save you the time, money, and attention that both tweezing and eyebrow threading repeatedly require. In addition, unlike tweezing and threading, Asian permanent eyebrows can provide fullness where nature has come up short!

French company PIP is under investigation after it was found that industrial grade silicone was leaking out of breast implants and traveling throughout the bodies of British women who underwent breast surgery. While breast surgery often comes with many understood risks, leakage is never intended to be one of them.
About 40,000 in the UK who had breast implant surgery had the PIP made silicone implants used during their surgery. Many of those women had the PIP silicone implants implanted in an effort to reconstruct their breasts after a mastectomy.
British authorities and surgeons have come to call the PIP made implants “ticking time bombs and many women are having the implants removed and replaced with new implants constructed of safer medical grade silicone. Having to go under the knife again unfortunately will be the only permanently safe option for women with PIP implants.
While post-surgery woes like hypopigmented scarring at incision sites can be corrected through simple procedures like paramedical permanent cosmetics and scar camouflage, leaking breast implants are much more serious. If you are one of the many women who has had breast implant surgery in and around the UK, make sure to check with your surgeon to ensure that your implants have not been recalled.

Traditionally, women had to choose between saline or silicone gel implants if they wanted to enlarge their bust line. Today, however, many plastic surgeons offering breast enlargement by way of fat transfer, an alternative that many patients are reportedly opting for
Constantino G. Mendieta, a breast contour specialist, based conveniently near the towns of Boca Raton and Miami Florida, is one surgeon providing numerous patients with more defined shapes using their own fat. During the procedure fat is first suctioned and harvested from another area of the body and then transferred by way of injection into the breast or even buttocks to provide more volume in these areas.
Many surgeons maintain that fat transfer to the breasts is less risky than saline and silicone implants. You may want to consider the procedure if you have asymmetrical breasts, as an accessory to a breast lift, or if you are interested in achieving very natural looking results after your breast enlargement.
There are some downsides to fat transfer implants such as higher cost, unpredictability, and the possibility of some fat being absorbed by the body, creating loss of volume. Scarring, as with all breast surgeries, is also something Florida breast surgery patients must consider. Since hypopigmented scarring will often occur at incision sites, Boca Raton scar camouflage and Boca Raton nipple replacement may be necessary.
